Definition: Self-powered transport refrigeration system with dedicated diesel engine driving compressor. Most common type of TRU for long-haul refrigerated transport.
Components:
- Diesel engine (5-25 HP typical)
- Compressor (refrigeration)
- Condenser (heat rejection)
- Evaporator (cooling unit)
- Fuel tank (15-50 liters typical)
- Electronic controller
Advantages:
- Independent of vehicle engine (operates when truck parked)
- High cooling capacity
- Proven reliability for long-haul
- Can operate 24/7 if fueled
Disadvantages:
- Fuel cost (4-12 liters/hour depending on unit size and ambient temperature)
- Emissions and noise
- Regular maintenance required
- Higher operating cost than electric or eutectic systems
Fuel Consumption: (Gauteng summer, -18°C setpoint):
- Small unit (van): 2-4 L/hour
- Medium unit (rigid truck): 4-8 L/hour
- Large unit (articulated trailer): 8-15 L/hour
