Unitrans has identified five market-wide shifts set to reshape African logistics in 2026, with significant implications for cold chain operators. Drawing on insights from the African Development Bank, World Bank, and AfCFTA Secretariat, the analysis highlights digital transformation, sustainability mandates, regional integration, e-commerce growth, and supply chain resilience as the defining trends.
For cold chain operators, several shifts stand out. Green logistics is moving from optional to mandatory—retailers like Woolworths are already piloting solar-powered electric delivery vehicles, while ports and freight operators explore “green corridors” supported by renewable energy across warehouses and transport fleets. Energy security has become critical: South African logistics hubs are investing in solar and backup power systems to maintain cold chain integrity during load shedding.
The AfCFTA rollout could increase intra-African trade by more than 50%, creating new demand for temperature-controlled cross-border logistics. Meanwhile, e-commerce growth is driving investment in urban micro-warehouses and AI-driven inventory systems—infrastructure that increasingly requires integrated cold storage for perishables and pharmaceuticals.
