Joburg Market Cold Storage is South Africa’s largest fresh produce market facility, operated by the City of Johannesburg. Located in City Deep, the market features 55 cold rooms accommodating 4,561 pallets of fresh produce and 50 banana ripening rooms handling 1,590 pallets. Cold storage is available 24 hours a day via market agents at affordable rates. The facility serves approximately 5,000 farmers nationally and 10,000-14,000 daily buyers, making it the largest fresh produce market in Africa by volume and value. New cold rooms for an additional 1,500 pallets were commissioned in early 2025. The facility maintains strict temperature control through manual and computer systems, with backup generators (R32 million Genfarm system) and 1MW solar capacity protecting against load shedding. Temperature range is 0°C to +12°C (chilled/ambient only, no frozen).
